Zimbabwe’s second largest mobile network operator, Telecel Zimbabwe, is on course to complete 200 new base stations across the country before year end, a senior official has said.

The construction of 200 additional base stations comes almost a month after Telecel had commissioned new offices in Bulawayo, with the aim to lure more customers.

Telecel Zimbabwe chief executive officer, Francis Mawindi, said the mobile telecommunication company was on course to meet its set targets for December this year.

Telecel which already has two million active subscribers says the new additional base stations would boost its subscriber base as the war for subscribers intensifies in Zimbabwe.

The other targets are ensuring that 85% of Zimbabwean people have access to Telecel's network, and increase its retail outlets to 18 from the current 12.

"We are on course to meet all the targets we have set for ourselves for December. By the end of the year we expect to have completed the installation of base stations at more than 200 new sites, bringing to more than 575 the number of base station sites we have altogether," said Mawindi.

"My vision is for Telecel to become the most innovative and pioneering communications company of choice in Zimbabwe and the region, a company that shapes the way people live and connect," he said.

Mawindi said Telecel aims to push the network coverage to 90% by December 2013 saying this would add four more retail networks during the same period to 22.
