Masiyiwa's Foundation offers 200 scholarships to Zimbabweans
Telecoms billionaire Strive Masiyiwa’s Higherlife Foundation is looking for 200 'brilliant' Zimbabweans for the Joshua Nkomo Scholarship.
The billionaire tech businessman has emphasised the need to grow the pool of STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics graduates across the continent, which he views as key to driving economic growth and stimulating innovation.
“Higherlife Foundation is leading the way in STEM education in Africa through the Joshua Nkomo Scholarship. This year, we are looking for 200 of Zimbabwe's brightest minds with strong ethical values and standards to join our growing community of Joshualites,” he said
According to Masiyiwa, Africa will require 23 million additional STEM graduates by 2030 to fill crucial roles, including engineers to develop infrastructure, scientists to advance healthcare, and tech innovators to drive digital transformation.
He stressed the importance of empowering the young generation. “It is especially important that these young people are included in decision-making and given appropriate opportunities for work and innovation,” he said
The founder of Econet Wireless, launched the Joshua Nkomo Scholarship in 2007 to help young Zimbabweans pursue higher education through the provision of financial support.
The initiative has grown to benefit other deserving young African people over the years.
“It is essential that we recognise the opportunity to provide our young people with the necessary education and skills to develop talent in these areas. By creating these possibilities, we are not just influencing their destinies but also securing the future of our continent,” he said.
“If you are a high-achieving student with a passion for STEM and a desire to serve your community and make a difference, I invite you to apply. This is more than just a scholarship; it's an opportunity to use your God-given talents to make a lasting difference."
