In a bid to remain relevant during the COVID-19 crisis affecting its customer base, Zambian telecommunications services provider Zamtel has launched free calling, free messages and free data services.

The company, like other telecommunications operators in the country, is looking at ways to alleviate the pressure on operations as subscribers continue to struggle to recharge and communicate.

According to recent official statistics Zamtel has over three million subscribers

Zamtel CEO Sydney Mupeta said the company knows that the pandemic is having a negative effect on the lives of its customers and the operator hopes the offer launched will help cushion the impact.

Mupeta said all mobile prepaid customers will receive complementary five calling minutes, 50 Mb of data and a further ten on-net SMSs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays while the pandemic lasts.

He added that the focus is on ensuring that people remain connected. “During this difficult period, it is critical that customers stay connected with their loved ones. We want to encourage people to stay home but remain connected with the family and friends.”

In related news, MTN Zambia has announced a partnership with Opera Mini to offer close to seven million customers free browsing on Opera Mini and Opera News during the global pandemic.

MTN Zambia issued a statement which read: “The innovative collaboration will entail that MTN Zambia customers will have the freedom to browse content through Opera Mini and Opera News for up to 50Mbs daily during this period when people are at home.”

Both MTN Zambia and Zamtel remain tight-lipped on how the pandemic will impact on their operations and ICT provisions.

Bank of Zambia governor Dr. Denny Kalyalya has warned the pandemic will have a massive effect all sectors in Zambia including telecommunications.
