Nigeria is working with private sector and nationals in diaspora to ensure that the automated passport application process runs smoothly.

The West Africans can now apply for international passports online without having to visit the Ministry of Interior in person.

This week marked the start of the project's first phase, with the next phases set to begin on February 8.

"Nigerians from all over the world will have a sweet experience," Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, promised.

In order to meet the stated dates for the automated passport application procedure, he met with a team of private sector professionals.

Earlier this month, the ministry began training passport control officers and enrolment officials from the Nigeria Immigration Service on computerised passport applications.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, welcomed the automated passport application process as a key to development.
