Telerix sees Zim potential for data
Zimbabwean ICT company, Telerix Communications, has positioned itself to benefit from the technology data requirements of Zimbabwean companies as the economy staggers towards recovery.
Telecoms companies in Zimbabwe are increasingly shifting their focus from voice services to data and other support services in the ICT sector.
Telerix is owned by Mauritius based but Zimbabwe focused investment company, Masawara, which believes ICT, mining and agriculture represent major growth areas in the country.
“We believe this business can become a market challenger in data services. We see significant value and potential in the ICT sector,” said Oliver Lutz, chief executive officer, Masawara.
“As part of the investment in Telerix Communications, Masawara has installed state of the art infrastructure procured from global leading suppliers CISCO and Alvarion,” he added.
Talkmore Nyoni an ICT consultant said Telerix positioning was strategic as most of the companies entering and already licensed to offer internet services in Zimbabwe would have to buy bandwidth from Telerix.
“Its very capital intensive and you need the latest equipment and technology to be able to run such an operation, which however is very lucrative considering the data needs of companies. Most companies are still behind and
that is great potential for Telerix retail and wholesale units,” said Nyoni.
Telerix holds an internet access provider license and has two business units; one selling international bandwidth to large corporates and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) while the other one is a retailer of “end user
connectivity” utilising the company’s own 4G Wimax network.
“We have set-up these units after connecting to the sea cable which is bringing high-speed internet connectivity,” said Lutz.
