Kwesé TV, Orange Botswana pen content agreement

Recent Africa focused pay-TV entrant Kwesé TV has signed a deal with telecommunications services provider Orange Botswana to deliver video content to the telco's subscribed customers.

The two companies will leverage the mobile operator's 4G to stream content to customers on mobile devices, an addition to the established direct-to-home (DTH) satellite platform.

Orange Botswana said the mobile streaming will include access to P Diddy's REVOLT TV, NBA TV, VICELAND and the Premier League among others offered by Kwesé TV.

"Batswana have been hungry for rich, engaging content and this partnership enables us to deliver TV into the palm of their hands," said Lepata Mafa-Nthomola, Orange Botswana's Director Legal and Corporate Affairs.

Orange Botswana launched 4G in 2015 to its more than one million customers countrywide, adding to the already existing GSM, GPRS, EDGE and 3G+ to accommodate mobile office applications and other multimedia applications.

Joseph Hundah, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Econet Media said, "As a multi-platform media business we are proud to offer our quality content to Orange subscribers on the move."

Kwesé TV records indicate that the company's capital expenditure in building out the platform will be in the region of US$46 million over the first five years across Africa.

In addition, the spend on content over the same period is forecast to top US$1.1 billion, emphasising the importance of building a viable and compelling customer proposition through the acquisition of premium and exclusive general entertainment and sports content.
