Sophia, Zimbabwe's first social humanoid robot, was launched this week at the University of Zimbabwe.

The robot was unveiled at the University of Zimbabwe as part of the United Nations Development Programme's Zimbabwe Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Innovation Week.

Sophia was created by Hanson Robotics, an AI and robotics startup based in Hong Kong.

The robot has avigation skills that are powered by AI and computer vision, as well as human-like features and linguistic ability.

Sophia, according to Hanson Robotics, was designed to aid people in real-world situations such as medicine, education, and AI research. According to its social media bio, the robot is a global ambassador and social media influencer.

Sophia's visit to Zimbabwe, according to the United Nations, will motivate young people, governments, and innovators to embrace AI as a development accelerator.

Tatenda Mavetera, minister of ICT, describes the event as a watershed moment in accepting AI and encouraging innovation.

She explained. "Let us be inspired to dream big as we welcome Sophia. Zimbabwe has the talent and potential to develop our own advanced robotics and AI advancements; let us invest in local skills and development.
