Kenya's tourism board believes CNN will help

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has said that it will engage with CNN to use the media channel's digital platform and advertise as part of an overall online campaign to boost the country's tourism sector.

Kenya has suffered negative publicity online, specifically following the Garissa University massacre that left 147 people dead. Al Shabaab attacks in Kenya have also resulted in several western countries issuing a travel advisory regarding the region.

In May last year, the Board said that it had raised over US$2.3 million to begin an online campaign to restore the country's image in the eyes of foreign visitors. The board is yet to report on the results of the campaign.

"Kenya has gone through various challenges as a result of various external factors and continued support from key partners especially the media is keeping the magic alive," KTB Managing Director, Muriithi Ndegwa said at the Indaba travel event in Durban, South Africa.

"Kenya remains a first choice tourism destination for many and we encourage tourists to give the country a chance to share with them more of Kenya's rich tourism product experience. We are certain that our partnership with CNN will yield positive results in getting our share of tourists back," he said.

The board will launch a 30 minute ad spot that will run on TV and also on CNN's digital platform and is expected to launch this May.
