Telkom SA announces expansion of FTTH network
In line with a commitment by its CEO to expand its open access fibre broadband network, Telkom SA has announced that twenty five additional communities will be connected by the end of September.
In a statement the company said fibre will be rolled out more areas around Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth in the coming weeks.
Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko said that the telco would ensure that is accessible to one million homes by March 2018 after reaching a the set target of half a million homes with such access by the end of 2016.
Alphonzo Samuels, MD of Wholesale and Networks for Telkom described the expansion as one that would benefit South Africa as a whole.
"South Africans deserve the best broadband infrastructure and we're committed to giving them a superior experience. Research conducted around the world has consistently shown a direct correlation between increased access to broadband and economic growth. As an emerging market, South Africa can only benefit from the increasing availability of fibre," said.
Telkom says current speeds on its network allow downloads of up to 100Mbps.
