Meta to pay Kenyan content creators
The Kenyan government commended Meta's decision to monetise material produced by East African content providers, joining many other countries that have already benefited.
Facebook Instream Ads and Facebook Reel Ads will now enable producers to monetise their unique content.
Meta confirmed the development on Tuesday, much to the satisfaction of the Kenyan government, which had been tasked by youths to ensure content creators are compensated for work on Meta platforms.
Kenya will follow in the footsteps of Nigeria and Ghana, who began benefiting from Meta payments in July.
“This expansion will inspire eligible creators in the vibrant creative industry in Kenya to earn money, while setting the bar high for creativity across the world and making meta’s family of apps the one-stop-shop for all creators,” said Moon Baz, Meta global partnerships lead: Africa, Middle East and Turkey.
John Tanui, principal secretary: department for ICT and digital economy, lauded Meta's action as a big step forward for Kenyan content creators, providing them with new ways to monetise their work and communicate with their audiences.
“This will undoubtedly enhance the local digital content ecosystem and set a new standard for innovation and creativity,” he said.
Tanui pledged the government's commitment to collaborating with Meta executives in the region and the company's global leadership to pursue additional opportunities.
He said: “We are also engaging other platform players in the digital space for an accelerated growth of the digital economy in Kenya.”
