Solly Malatsi, South Africa's communications and digital technologies minister recently called for a shared vision of a digitally connected, inclusive, and prosperous Africa.

Malatsi's keynote speech at the Africa IT Festival 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa, laid out an ambitious vision for a digitally connected Africa, stressing the continent's potential for growth and inclusion through enhanced technology access.

He underlined the crucial need for universal connectivity as well as initiatives to reduce data costs and make mobile devices more affordable.

The minister also predicted that Africa's Internet economy would be worth $180 billion by 2025, and urged stakeholders to work together to improve digital inclusiveness and partnerships.

Malatsi said: “As South Africa, we stand ready to lead not in isolation, but in solidarity with every country on the continent. Let us shape a future that is inclusive, that is prosperous, and one that reflects the vast potential on our continent.

“If we do that we will be able to propel Africa towards meeting the digital needs of our generation and those that come after us.”

Addressing the digital divide in South Africa, Malatsi discussed lowering the cost of data and devices so that more people can participate in the digital economy.

“We are also committed to reducing cost of data and devices making digital access affordable for more South Africans. Lowering this cost is not just about access. Its giving people the uplift they need to participate and thrive fully in the digital economy,” he said.

In conclusion, he urged a collective commitment to promote Africa's digital future, expressing gratitude to the event organisers and willingness to engage with other countries for a prosperous and inclusive future.
