Kenya Airways, Airtel partner to launch MVNO

Telecoms firm Airtel has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kenya Airways to launch a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) for the airline.

According to a press statement, the MoU agreement is expected to see Airtel Kenya provide network infrastructure services to the East African airline.

The MVNO is expected to provide mobile services for Kenya Airways such as customer registration, SIM card issuance, billing and customer care to end users.

The agreement, however, is still subject to regulatory approvals.

Kenya Airways chief executive officer and managing director, Titus Naikuni said in a statement, “At Kenya Airways, we are now moving towards a strategic direction that affords us an opportunity to meet our guests’ needs aboard our aircrafts and also extend the same brand value to their communication needs through an affordable option.”

Naikuni added, “Through this partnership with Airtel, we are optimistic that our guests will soon be enjoying a service that allows them better calling rates while in Kenya or roaming within the wide Airtel network.”

According to Airtel Kenya, the MVNO services will run on the unused capacity on its network, ensuring that it maintains seamless quality experience to consumers.

Christian de Faria Airtel Africa chief executive officer said in a statement, "We are greatly encouraged by the shared vision with Kenya Airways and the common urgency to find solutions that will enable travelling customers connect to their loved ones and businesses throughout their travel.”
