Kenya flood victims endorse mobile money over cash
The majority of Kenyans impacted by the worst flooding in living memory choose to get relief through mobile money over food or cash vouchers.
The Kenya Cash Consortium (KCC) highlighted this pattern as the East African country deals with the aftermath of floods that killed approximately 300 people.
The KCC with support from the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid, provides multi-purpose cash assistance to food insecure households impacted by the floods in Kenya.
According to the National Disaster Operations Centre, torrential rains and floods have displaced 278 380 people (or 55,676 households) and affected about 412 763 (82,552 families) from March to May.
The KCC is coordinating humanitarian groups' reaction to deliver help to affected communities.
It revealed that crisis-affected households favoured mobile money transactions over cash and vouchers.
“The top reported reasons for preferring mobile money were that it was easily accessible (96 percent), offers more flexibility time to purchase (29 percent) and is more secure (11 percent).”
Some 779 households were sampled in the research KCC carried out in the grief-stricken country.
