Kenyan county fights crime with digital means

Closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras are set to be installed across Kenya’s Machakos county as part of its digital security plan.

Machakos governor, Dr. Alfred Mutua, launched the plan, which intends to put up 22,000 CCTV cameras and also erect street lights in a bid to detect criminal activities.

The governor also flagged off 120 police cars, which have been fitted with CCTV cameras to enhance security in all the constituencies in the county.

“Every person should sleep soundly without fear of being invaded by thieves and business should open all night long without fear of thieves,” the governor said at the launch of the programme in Tala, Machakos county.

Already, the county has opened up five call centres and a computerised criminal recording system is already in place.

This will be assisted by a DNA testing lab to be set up by end of March this year.
