Growth for Kenya’s high-speed internet market
Kenya’s broadband subscription numbers increased by 2.7% during the October to December 2013 period, as revealed by the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK).
The country’s regulator noted that the East African country’s broadband subscription numbers increased to reach 1,435,267 subscriptions from 1,398,395 during the quarter.
The CCK’s report defines broadband as speeds greater than or equal to 256 Kbps in one or both directions.
Meanwhile, the country’s total internet and data services market has continued to show positive growth signs now at 13.1 million subscribers up from 11.9 million subscriptions in the previous quarter.
According to the CCK during this quarter it witnessed growth in internet/data subscriptions of 13.0% compared to the same period of the previous year, which only saw an increase of 11.5%.
The commission also noted that “mobile subscribers have remained the greatest contributor of internet/data subscriptions accounting for 99% of total subscriptions”.
“The number of fixed fibre optic data/internet subscriptions during the quarter to stand at 67,470 subscriptions up from 61,739 subscriptions recorded representing growth of 9.3%," says the CCK.
“By the end of the quarter the population that had access to internet stood at 52.3% up from 47.1% recorded in the preceding quarter representing growth of 5.2%,” says the CCK.
