Zimbabwe’s TelOne appoints new MD

Zimbabwean state-owned fixed-line operator TelOne has appointed a new managing director.

Chipo Mutasa is set to take over from Hampton Mhlanga, who was previously the firm’s acting managing director.

Mutasa is a chartered accountant who has also been the chief executive officer of hotel and leisure company, the Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG).

Figures from the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) last year suggested that TelOne has 373,000 subscribers.

The fixed line operator, though, lags behind its mobile counterparts who dominate that country’s telecommunications market.

According to Potraz, Econet is the biggest telco in Zimbabwe with over 7 million network users while Telecel has just over 2 million active subscribers.

Mobile operator NetOne, has just under 2 million subscribers, says Potraz.
