Starlink - satellite broadband internet service - is now available in Zambia.

Zambia has connected the country's first school to the global space company, Starlink.

The connection of Kalomo Secondary School in the Southern province comes four months after the country's first satellite internet constellation was granted a permission to operate.

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authoenabled the historic moment by donating a Starlink kit and 20 laptops to the school.

According to the authorities, the link at the school with 2 000 students has the capacity to give internet connectivity to 200 devices at a speed of roughly 180 gigabytes per second.

The occasion was presided over by Felix Mutati, Minister of Science and Technology.

"Our children must be empowered with education tools to steer their education path," he went on to say.

He stated that such agreements with the business sector were in accordance with the new government's policies of providing public institutions with accessible and fast internet services.

The deployment of Starlink's low earth orbit satellites would eventually assist the country's 10 provinces.

In March, President Haikande Hichilema's administration signed an agreement with Liquid Telecom to provide access to local schools and the healthcare sector.

In addition, Liquid plans to build a data centre and multiple fibre projects in the landlocked Southern African country of more than 20 million people.
