Broadband wholesaler WIOCC beefs up African presence

African broadband wholesale carrier West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) has hired three senior telecoms industry professionals in a bid to strengthen its presence on the continent.

Darren Bedford, from PCCW (formerly Gateway Communications); Martin Mutiiria, from Nokia Siemens Networks; and Jason Tutty from Reliance Globalcom have been hired to respectively head up director roles of ‘Africa Business Development’, ‘Sales’; and ‘Network Planning and Operations’.

Operating as a wholesaler, WIOCC offers carriers connectivity to over 400 locations across 30 African countries by utilising more than 50,000km of terrestrial fibre and 40,000km of submarine fibre-optic cable.

WIOCC also has investments in three major international submarine cables along Africa’s shores: East Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy), Europe India Gateway (EIG) and West Africa Cable System (WACS).

And the company adds that its international network extends to 100 cities in 29 countries in Europe and more than 700 cities in 70 countries globally.

“We are seeing increasing demand from businesses for diversity-rich, high-speed international connectivity to and from Africa. We are expanding our business development and sales teams in Africa to meet this demand,“ says WIOCC chief executive officer Chris Wood in a statement.

“The skills, experience and contacts that Darren, Martin and Jason bring will be invaluable in helping new and existing customers benefit from WIOCC’s award-winning network, which seamlessly links 50,000km of African terrestrial fibre with multiple international submarine cables,” adds Wood.
