The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has turned to technology ahead of the next election in an effort to improve vote legitimacy.

This week, the MEC introduced 720 hand-held Electoral Management Devices, which will be utilised for voter registration, photo verification, candidate nomination, and results administration.

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulira told ITWeb in an interview: "The new gadgets are efficient, fast, dependable, and portable. They include cutting-edge security mechanisms that ensure data integrity even in the event of theft."

In a statement, the MEC said, "The commission remains dedicated to conducting credible and transparent elections that reflect the electorate. As a result, the commission encourages all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, and the media, to support its efforts and actively participate in the electoral process."
