Satellite carrier Gilat Satcom establishes Ghana PoP

Wholesale satellite carrier Gilat Satcom on Tuesday announced that it has established a new Point of Presence (PoP) in Ghana.

A Point-of-Presence (POP) is an access point to the rest of the internet that typically involves a point at which two or more different networks or communication devices connect.

And Gilat Satcom’s new Ghanaian PoP is directly connected to Ghana’s existing fibre network. It uses multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) routing as well as connects to the West Africa Cable System (WACS), which provides a reliable route for international traffic.

Gilat Satcom says it has established the PoP in Ghana in a bid to provide more reliable, high-speed, cost-effective broadband connectivity over fibre to internet service providers (ISPs), enterprises and other private network operators across the country.

“We are investing heavily in both our fibre and satellite operations throughout Africa,” says Dan Zjicek, Gilat Satcom’s chief executive officer, in a statement.

“This expansion of our service in Ghana will increase both capacity and speeds,” adds Zjicek.

Gilat Satcom particularly specialises in satellite and fibre-based communication services in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Gilat says it has been operational in Ghana for more than ten years, providing satellite capacity to ISPs and businesses.

It is also shareholder in WIOCC, which owns the West Africa Cable System (WACS) that has a landing station in Ghana.
