Nigerian smartphone movie application, Afrinolly, has been downloaded more than 2.3 million times since its launch a year ago.

This is according to FansConnectOnline founder, Chike Maduegbuna, whose company created the popular movie app.

Afrinolly is a smartphone video application that allows subscribers to watch African short films or documentaries, view Nollywood movie trailers and read news about the Nigeria’s film industry.

The application can be downloaded for free and was built to be applicable on mobile devices running on Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Nokia phones.

According to Maduegbuna, 90% of the apps’ downloads have been on smartphones.

Maduegbuna has told ITWeb Africa Afrinolly is similar to international movie, TV and celebrity content source IMdB, but for the African continent.

“Currently, Afrinolly is the highest downloaded application in Africa with 2.3 million downloads,” he said.

“We have content from nine African countries on Afrinolly, and our application can be downloaded anywhere in the world,” he added.

Maduegbuna also said they are rolling out the second edition of their short film competition in October this year, where content producers submit their work and stand a chance to be selected to have their films appear on Afrinolly.
