MTN Zambia's plan to curb multiple SIM usage

MTN Zambia has launched a new plan that aims to eliminate multiple sim card usage in the Southern African country.

Dubbed Spaka1 sim, the new plan is touted to offer the lowest calling rates across all networks in Zambia.

Using the plan customers can call other networks at the same rate as calling the MTN network and take advantage of free calling minutes, unlimited SMSs and data bundles on every recharge made.

MTN Zambia CEO Charles Molapisi launched the plan in Lusaka this week and said mobile communication is a necessity that cannot be limited by cost and other unnecessary inconveniences.

"The culture of multiple sim card usage must come to an end. Our understanding is that many customers maintain multiple sim cards because they are looking for the most affordable rates depending on the network they are calling. However, you will agree that this is inconveniencing and costly as customers have to recharge more than one account in search of affordability," Molapisi said.

He added, "the Spaka1 offer is a game changer giving you the lowest rates to call across all networks in the country. With this plan, we expect multiple sim card usage to stop, much to the benefit of the customer."

MTN is Zambia's largest mobile phone operator with over 5 million customers, followed by Airtel and the government owned Zambia Telecommunications Company (Zamtel).
