'We are still keen on local content' says Multichoice Kenya
When DSTv in February this year announced the closure of Maisha Magic, East Africa's entertainment channel, most thought that the company was shying away from local content.
Speaking to journalists, Philip Wahome Communications Manager at Multichoice (which owns DSTv) said that the channel did not attain the expected ratings and they came to the decision to shut it down. The channel offered East African based programming from drama to reality shows.
"We have not actually shut down most of the shows. Some of them will move to Africa Magic Swahili channel which has a lot of content that is East African based," he said.
"I can tell you without divulging much detail that the business is always looking at ways of improving its offerings."
Wahome alluded to the continuing support of local football through sponsorship of their commitment in supporting local content.
The company however said that Maisha Magic counterpart, Maisha Magic Swahili will still be live through DSTv and GOTv.
DSTv also commented on their recent increase in price citing the growing costs of doing business including the exchange rate of the dollar. The new pricing structure will see subscribers pay a little more from April 1st.
"We take so many considerations before this decision is taken," Wahome said. "Most of our acquisition costs happen in dollars. When we purchase content it is done in US dollars, when buying bandwidth it is done in US dollars."
Wahome was speaking while unveiling the company's content strategy for their new financial year.
