Kenya's Able Wireless faces roll out hurdles

Kenyan on-demand wireless streaming service provider Able Wireless has recalled all its black box equipment that was distributed to individuals as part of a test phase.

The company has shut its network down and announced that they would focus on their content delivery network as they take in lessons they have learnt from the initial test phase.

"We have been stealthily running our test service for a few early adopters to try better understand how you interact with our service as well as the real story surrounding Kenyan infrastructure. The information we have will help us improve on certain aspects like Quality of Service and Roll-Out Planning among other things," Kahenya Kamunyu, the founder of the company announced.

"The downer is that the service will no longer work for anyone with an Able Wireless BlackBox. Please arrange to return your BlackBox."

Able Wireless is looking to disrupt the movie and film industry in Kenya by providing a digital rental service for movies and television series, similar to Netflix in the US.

The roll out has been hampered by government restrictions that have seen the company wait for months for licences and approvals. The company subsequently received its official license in October this year.

Able Wireless said by the end of October it had received 40,000 customer requests for the service. It is still unclear when the company will roll out its revolutionary product.
