Malawi's National Commission for Science and technologies (NCST) is arranging an Artificial Intelligence (AI) demo day later this month to showcase local AI products and hold policy discussions that would propel the Southern African country into the forefront of embracing emerging technologies.

Isaac Chingota, chief technology transfer officer at NCST, highlighted that this initiative provides an opportunity to showcase locally generated AI, which has not received sufficient promotion.

This marks the first time they are undertaking such an event, with the hope that Malawians will embrace AI.

“We take note that locally generated AI have not been promoted enough and this is an opportunity for them,” he said.

Chingota emphasised that the event will include live demonstrations of selected AI technologies for an online audience. Key stakeholders relevant to these technologies will also be invited to participate.

“We are going to have demonstrations of selected AI technologies to a live online audience. We are also going to invite key stakeholders that are relevant to the technologies,” Chingota explains.

Established by the 2003 Science and Technology Act, NCST is a government parastatal organization with the mission to advise the government and stakeholders on matters related to science, technology, and innovation.

The commission's goal is to promote, regulate, and coordinate the application of science, technology, and innovation for national development.
