JoziHub opens its doors

Africa's latest technology hub, JoziHub, officially opened its doors in Johannesburg last night at the trendy 44 Stanley Avenue in Milpark.

The hub is the brainchild of mobile technology incubator, the Praekelt Foundation, with funding partners that include search giant Google, Omidyar Network and ISlabs.

Founders of JoziHub say the facility is planned to help connect potential entrepreneurs with developers.

The hub, though, is among a string of similar facilities to have be opened in and around Johannesburg.

According to Africahubs.crowdmap.com, tech hubs in the Gauteng province include the likes of CodeinBraam in Johannesburg and the House 4 Hack in Pretoria.

Meanwhile, JoziHub joins prominent tech hubs in Africa such as the iHub in Nairobi, Kenya.

“Technology hubs can play a pivotal role in fostering the emergence of a new generation of African tech entrepreneurs,” said Gustav Praekelt, founder of the Praekelt Foundation.

“By providing the training, support, facilities and networks required to enable entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into sustainable businesses, incubators such as JoziHub can make an immediate and lasting impact on local innovation and development,” he added.

During JoziHub’s first three months, its facilities are planned to be free to use for entrepreneurs and developers to join and use.

However, as demand grows certain services such as a shared space, hot desks, access to mentors and events are intended to be charged for.

Founders of JoziHub say they also plan to work closely with other hubs across the African content.
