Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has visited Nairobi-based innovation hub and hacker space iHub and met with developers as part of his first trip to Africa.

This week the social network executive also engaged with budding entrepreneurs, project developers and tech enthusiasts at the Yaba-based Co-Creation Hub in Nigeria, before heading off East to Kenya.

According to Facebook, Zuckerberg will use his time in Kenya to explore how the country's pioneering mobile money ecosystem is evolving and how technology innovation is changing the country.

"He was particularly excited to see how mobile money and social media are driving ecommerce in the region and creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs and communities," read a statement issued by the social network.

Zuckerberg also spent some time with developers in The Community Space as well as those behind BRCK, an American-owned, Kenya-based start-up that built a rugged, self-powered, mobile WiFi device which connects people and things to the internet.

The Facebook founder later posted "I had lunch in Nairobi with Joseph Mucheru, the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary of Information and Communications. We talked about internet access and his ambitious plans for connecting everyone in Kenya."
