Telkom SA dealing with network congestion

Telkom South Africa has confirmed congestion on certain sections of its 2300 Mhz LTE networks across some of the busier metros.

The company attributes the congestion to an increase in demand for mobile data services, as well as for mobile voice and subscriptions.

"While our networks are upgraded and maintained on an ongoing basis, additional infrastructure investment have been made in recent months and are currently underway, to further accommodate this unprecedented increase in demand," the company said.

A statement issued by the telco also says the congested areas have been identified and Telkom is working with its provider Huawei "to fast-track the implementation of additional core capacity, site backhaul and radio capacity."

The company apologised for any speed reductions, during peak times, and added that improvements in the most congested areas will be felt in the next week, with overall improvement across all sites within the next three weeks.

In July Telkom launched a new solution 'FreeMe', which it claims represents a complete overhaul of its mobile product offering and represents a breakaway from the conventional smartphone deal.

Attila Vitai, Telkom Consumer CEO, said, "Data has become the central requirement for most smartphone users, so that is what we have prioritised."
