Teraco has started construction on its CT2 hyperscale data centre in Brackenfell, Cape Town, South Africa.

The expansion, which is expected to be completed in early 2025, will use environmentally beneficial cooling and water management techniques, says the company.

Teraco announced that the expansion at the Cape Town Campus will raise the essential IT load to 50MW, at that site.

CT2 Phase 2 will include four 5.3 MW data halls, two 3.1 MW data halls, and two 2.2 MW data halls.

“It increases the critical power load capacity at Teraco facilities to 185MW, which includes the Isando Campus JB1/JB3/JB5 (70MW), Bredell Campus JB2/JB4 (64MW), Cape Town Campus CT1/CT2 (50MW), and Durban (1MW),” says the company.

Teraco says the expansion caters for the increasing demand by enterprise customers and hyperscale cloud providers for data centre capacity.

According to the company, CT2 is connected to CT1 via diverse fibre routes as part of Teraco's larger Cape Town Campus and provides enterprises with direct access to Platform Teraco, an ecosystem of over 250 network providers, global cloud on-ramps, subsea cable systems, access to over 50 managed service providers, and direct peering at NAPAfrica’s internet exchange point.

“Clients placed in either of these facilities can connect to AWS Direct Connect and Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute directly, or through Teraco's Africa Cloud Exchange,” says Teraco.

The company says Cape Town, as one of Africa's most digitally linked cities, is a natural location for Teraco's ongoing investment in data centre infrastructure on the continent.

“Cape Town is home to thriving digitally connected businesses such as telecommunications, finance, ecommerce, logistics, and retail. The city benefits from its excellent location near Africa's southern tip and serves as a hub for important subsea cable networks such as Equiano, ACE, WACS, and SAT-3/SAFE. The quantity of subsea cables landing in Cape Town continues to grow, with the 2AFRICA cable system anticipated to arrive soon. “
