Nairobi city turns to e-payments to cut long queues

Electronic payments are planned to be switched on for Nairobi city fees for residents by mid-year, after the city has chosen JamboPay to automate its revenue collection.

JamboPay, a local online payment gateway, plans to have several payment options available for the Nairobi City County (NCC) including mobile money, internet payments and point of service payments slated to start in July this year.

This system is planned to end long lines currently being witnessed in cashier booths across the county headquarters at Nairobi’s City Hall.

“Today we are please to serve the citizens of Nairobi providing the JamboPay payment platform to the Nairobi City County. We will deploy our technology aimed at decentralising payment to the county from City Hall to homes and offices. This partnership shows the trust and support of the NCC in youth enterprises, local knowledge and expertise to serve Kenyans,” JampoPay chief executive officer, Danson Muchemi, said.

Motorists will, for example, have the ability to pay for parking while at home before getting to the city through mobile phone applications.

The payment company, which started small under the brand Web Tribe in 2009, has over the years won over customers hitting a high of 100,000 users by August last year.

The company now services big companies such as the Nation Media Group, Uchumi Supermarket and FargoShopping.

The company has also helped users pay bills through mobile money and through local and international debit or credit cards.

JamboPay fought 65 other local and international companies to land the deal which will be their biggest yet.
