Acer, a PC technology company, will shortly begin manufacturing monitors in South Africa.

The Taipei, Taiwan-headquartered hardware multinational announced its plans this week, stating that local production paves the way for future projects targeted at creating jobs an boosting local communities.

The company noted that offering affordable access to technology is critical for economic growth and social progress.

Glenn Du Toit, Acer Africa's country manager, says that in today's digital landscape, any attempt to improve access to technology is valuable.

“As laptop computers become more and more compact, even at entry price points, monitors play a crucial role in enabling individuals to have a larger, often better quality, and even more healthy experience in their home or office,” he says.

“Quality monitor displays can reduce eye strain and allow users to experience less fatigue. We also need to acknowledge that not all monitors are of the same high standards as there are some cheap panels available.”

The monitors will be assembled in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, where the company has set up its production plant, with the start of the assembly set for next month. Some 27 new employees will join the company at the assembly plant, the company says.

In terms of local product launch timelines, Acer says its range of consumer displays, including 24-inch and 27-inch 100Hz IPS monitors, is set to be available in August 2024.

For commercial monitors, the range will follow, with production slated for September 2024.

Gaming monitors will be in the final phase of Acer’s local assembly plans and will feature 27-inch 180Hz monitors.
