Kenya and Tanzania lead technology evolution

East African nations Kenya and Tanzania have been hailed for their swift adoption of digital and mobile technologies to improve their lives.

According to Magnus Mchunguzi, head of Ericsson South Africa in terms of mobility evolvement the East African region is leading ahead neighbouring countries and developing at a fast rate.

Mchunguzi made the comments in line with the launch of the Ericsson 2014 sub-Saharan Africa Mobility report, which noted how digital technology is fast becoming a part of everyday life in sub-Saharan Africa.

"I think more than any nation East Africa is doing well,” he told ITWeb Africa.

Once the undersea cables landed and connected to that region it opened up opportunities for a lot of innovation, Mchunguzi added.

"Kenya has a very big programming culture.

"People in Kenya are trying to new innovations, they are building new applications and they have adopted the try and fail attitude," he added.

Kenya has often been hailed for the success of its mobile money service, M-Pesa.

Meanwhile, neighbouring country Tanzania has been described as the blogging nation.

The blogging culture in Tanzania is where everybody is blogging about somebody, its more like gossip, but that’s not a bad thing but its gossip culture, Mchunguzi explained

He told ITWeb Africa that Tanzania’s "gossip culture" has moved to blogs where everybody has a blog, which in turn resulted in data consumption in the country.

“There is a huge number of websites and increased data usage in Tanzania.

"If you look at the penetration of websites and blogging that is what is pushing the penetration of broadband much quicker because people are doing a lot of content so broadband usage is also increasing. Whats data without any content on top of it," Mchunguzi noted.
