The improvement in infrastructure has seen the increase of international bandwidth to Kenya more than double to record a 117.9% increase between January and March 2015.

According to Q3 sector statistics released yesterday by the Communication Authority, international bandwidth increased to 1.6Gbps - up from 0.7Gbps recorded during the last quarter.

"This growth was mainly contributed by TEAMS (The East African Marine System) that lit additional capacity to meet growing demand of bandwidth. Used capacity also increased by 57.3 percent to reach 783, 761 Mbps up from 498,121 Mbps recorded during the last quarter. The used capacity represented 47.0 percent of the total available bandwidth in the country," the report stated.

TEAMS is a 5,000km undersea cable, a joint venture by the government and Kenyan operators holding 85% share, with Etisalat holding 15% share.

The report also noted the increase of internet users from 26.1 million in the last quarter to 29.1 between the disclosed quarter, bringing internet penetration in Kenya to 71.7%.

In the mobile telephony sector, Equity Bank's Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), Finserve Africa (Equitel) is slowly gaining popularity as it now records 1.9% of the market share. Equitel subscribers currently stand at well over 650,000, clocking 2.3 million minutes during the quarter, while traffic to other mobile networks stood at 17.2 million.

With a total of 38.4 million mobile subscribers, Kenya's mobile phone penetration is recorded at 85.5%.
