Kenya: TV switch offs before year-end?
Kenya’s migration from analogue broadcasting signal to digital could take place before the year is out, according to regional media.
The Star in Kenya quotes Francis Wangusi, director general of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), as saying the exact date migration to digital television transmission will be decided in a meeting between stakeholders.
“…. the switch off must happen before the end of the year, but the exact day will be decided in the meeting. We have invited all organisations involved in the suit.”
The latest development in the East African country’s digital migration stems from a ruling by the Supreme Court in September that the CA engage with stakeholders regarding a date for the transition.
Kenya’s digital migration has been hampered by delays as well as legal wrangling between the Regulator and broadcast houses.
According to The Star, Wangusi has stipulated that the delayed migration has resulted in losses by licensed set-top-box distributors.
The CA is said to be ready to embark on a sensitisation campaign in anticipation of a last minute rush.
