This year's Southern Africa Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC) will focus on artificial intelligence's transformational power.

SATNAC 2024, hosted by Telkom, will be held from October 6 to 9 at the Skukuza Rest Camp in the heart of Kruger National Park with the topic "The AI-Driven Hyperconnected Future: Co-creating Shared Value."

This comes as South Africa is rapidly establishing itself as a global leader in AI adoption, overcoming old technology prejudices. 

According to recent data, more than 60% of South African professionals utilise generative AI tools on a regular basis, which is higher than in many Western countries.

This readiness to accept AI is reflected in the strong desire for training among the country's workers, with about 85% showing interest.

This proactive approach to AI positions South Africa for significant economic growth. The AI market in the country is projected to reach R6.9 billion by 2025, driven by increasing investment and adoption across various industries.

Dr. Mmaki Jantjies, SATNAC Chairperson and Group Executive of the Innovation and Transformation Office at Telkom SA,highlighted that many businesses are recognising AI’s potential to streamline operations, boost productivity, and drive innovation while also acknowledging the need for enhanced skills.

“As AI continues to reshape the continental and global landscape, events like SATNAC are critical for understanding insights, trends, and research on AI innovation affecting both the South African and global communities,” she said.

She underlined that SATNAC empowers people to harness AI's transformative power by fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the development of homegrown talent.

Now in its 26th year, Dr Jantjies said SATNAC is Telkom’s commitment to innovation and research in the ICT sector.

The conference attracts over 300 delegates annually, solidifying its position as one of the continent’s leading ICT events.

It provides a vital platform for industry professionals, academics, and operators to share knowledge, discuss advancements in applied research, and explore the latest trends shaping the future of ICT.
