UAE group invests in Egyptian price comparison startup

Price comparison startup BKAM.com has become the first Egyptian company to receive an investment boost from United Arab Emirates (UAE) headquartered Jabbar Internet Group.

Launched in October 2012, the Alexandria-based website BKAM.com is said to be the Middle East’s ‘first’ price-comparison website. BKAM.com offers product information such as price, retail locations and reviews on products that are already listed somewhere online.

BKAM.com also plans to provide information on products sold at retailers' with no online presence at all.

Jabbar Internet Group in a statement also says that BKAM.com receives “over 6,000 daily visits and over 50,000 downloads of its mobile application.”

BKAM.com has just launched in the UAE and plans to launch in Saudi Arabia later this year as well.

Meanwhile, Jabbar Internet Group was founded by the team of entrepreneurs behind the Middle East’s Maktoob.com, a news portal that was sold to search giant Yahoo! in 2009.

Jabbar’s move to invest in BKAM.com comes after Jabbar has also ‘spun off’ its e-commerce assets into the Souq Group. Jabbar Internet Group says it has also exited Middle East group buying Cobone.com successfully.

Jabbar’s level of investment in BKAM.com, though, has not been revealed.

“BKAM.com was an idea we just came up with just over a year ago,” said Mahmoud Abdel Fattah, founder of BKAM.com (pictured).

“This growth in such a short time is the result of all of our hard work, innovation and the intelligent technology we developed. Our mobile application is a huge hit with Egyptian consumers. We anticipate similar growth in the UAE and then Saudi Arabia in a few months."," Fattah added.

Samih Toukan, Chairman, Jabbar Internet Group, added: “We approached BKAM.com because we saw in their vision the promise of something very successful both in Egypt and across the region."

"There has been a surge in Egyptian technology startups over the past few years, but BKAM.com really stood out for us and we're pleased to bring them under our umbrella."
