Nigeria mobile number portability launch expected

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is planned to be implemented in Nigeria today, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

MNP allows subscribers to port their mobile phone numbers from one network to another, while retaining their original numbers.

The NCC says it has fixed the launch of MNP in Lagos today, according to This Day newspaper.

Subscribers are expected to be able to start switching networks among the country’s GSM providers such as MTN, Etisalat and Glo Mobile.

However, the NCC says the launch of the service is not yet extended to Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators such as Capcom.

The NCC says porting is planned to be free of charge for subscribers, with the ability to change networks being done once every 90 days.

The move to introduce MNP, though, follows several delays in the process owing to mobile operators not being ready for the change.
