Startups on venture capital website VC4Africa secure $12mn in funding
Companies listed on venture capital website VC4Africa have secured ‘$12 million in funding’, according to a survey held with the entrepreneurs.
Founders of VC4Africa say the website connects qualified investors from around the world with entrepreneurs building companies across Africa.
Entrepreneurs who register their companies on the VC4Africa platform have access to free online tools, mentorship opportunities, private deal rooms and networking opportunities with the VC4Africa Investor Network.
Ventures on VC4Africa are at an early stage level and require investments of less than $1 million.
More than 800 companies are profiled on the website, while over 1,500 ventures have been screened since launch, says VC4Africa.
And VC4Africa says key results of its survey indicate that 92 of the 160 ventures that participated said they were successful in securing nearly $12,000,000 in funding.
The survey was sent to 800 entrepreneurs with 160 entrepreneurs having responded, a 20% response rate.
Other findings of the survey say that on average, startups registered with VC4Africa secured $80,000 in funding versus expansion companies that secured $237,000.
Also, 75% of the ventures that join VC4Africa are pre-revenue startups, while 25% join as ventures seeking growth and expansion capital.
“It is clear the companies are growing in size and adding full time positions (FTE’s) year on year,” says the report.
“By 2012 the companies registered on VC4Africa employed a combined 449 people. By 2013 the same companies expected to increase their combined staff to 2,263 FTEs,” adds the report.
The report further outlines that technology and internet startups have dominated funding received via the website. Technology startups raised just under $3 million while internet businesses raised just over $2 million.
Energy and agriculture startups, meanwhile, respectively secured just over $2 million and under $1.5 million.
