High traffic throttles IEC election results website

High traffic knocked out South Africa’s official election website on Thursday morning, just as voting results started trickling on a day after the country’s national and provincial poll.

The official website of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was not working on Thursday morning, as South Africans have headed online to find out results of their vote on Wednesday.

However, at midday, the website started coming online again.

“We are aware of the unavailability of our website due to high interest in election results. Working to resolve issues asap,” said the IEC on its official Twitter account on Thursday morning.

“Due to the great interest in election results our website and IEC Voter app are experiencing high traffic. Pls be patient,” tweeted the IEC earlier as well.

Efforts by ITWeb Africa to access results on the IEC’s official Android app have proved to be intermittent in the morning while other users of the electoral body’s mobile app have also reported difficulty in accessing results.

“Times out all the time, given up,” KaasLaam, or ‏@KaasLaam, told ITWeb Africa via Twitter regarding the IEC mobile application early on Thursday morning.

The IEC launched its election mobile application earlier this week.

According to a statement from the IEC, the launch of the apps have been aimed at enhancing voter education and information ahead of the elections.

Meanwhile, the IEC app is available for download on major app stores such as those for Android, BlackBerry, Apple, Windows 8 and Symbian.

The app contains general data as well voter information such as registration status, voting station locations, and special votes notifications.

The app also provides election information such as candidate lists, and seat calculations while also intending to provide election results.
