Two SA-based journalists allegedly running Baba Jukwa account
Two journalists based in South Africa are accused of being behind the infamous Baba Jukwa Facebook account page, according to ‘hackers’ and a Zimbabwean news website.
Launched anonymously in 2013, the Baba Jukwa Facebook page has riled officials of Zimbabwe’s ruling party, the Zanu-PF, by posting daily revelations of alleged wrongdoings by the country’s leaders.
To date the Facebook page has notched up more than 450,000 likes.
On the page, Jukwa has described himself as a “concerned father, fighting nepotism and directly linking community with their leaders, government, MPs and ministers.”
And at the time the page was launched, it was reported that “Jukwa was a senior member of president Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF.”
But reports by NewZimbabwe.com allege otherwise.
On Saturday the news website reported that “Baba Jukwa and his side-kick, Sahwira waBaba Jukwa are in fact two barely known Zimbabwean journalists based in South Africa who freelance for The Zimbabwean newspaper.”
The names of the journalists said to be running the account are Mxolisi Ncube and Mkhululi Chimoio.
But the only ‘proof’ the NewZimbabwe.com website has at its disposal is that of a YouTube video of hackers gaining access to what appears to be Baba Jukwa’s gmail account, which in turn is linked to the men’s phone numbers.
The video then goes on to detail the men’s phone numbers on WhatsApp screengrabs.
ITWeb Africa contacted Mkhululi Chimoio, whose number has been displayed on one of the WhatsApp screengrabs. However, he refused to talk to ITWeb Africa as he says all correspondence needs to be done through his lawyer.
His lawyer; though, has not answered phone calls from ITWeb Africa.
Nevertheless, Ncube has publicly denied such allegations and announced that they will be suing the news website amid the allegations.
Ncube has told Zimbabwe’s NewsDay newspaper that he has been wrongly fingered as running the Facebook account because he had previously been in contact with Baba Jukwa.
In a joint statement Ncube and Chimoio stated, “We would hereby like to notify that we have, with immediate effect, handed over the case to our lawyer, Obert Gutu of Gutu and Chikowero Attorneys-at-Law, who shall institute legal action on behalf of the two journalists.”
