MTN Uganda surpasses 50-50 gender employment ratio target
In its efforts to achieve gender equity, MTN Uganda has surpassed its 50-50 gender employment ratio target.
MTN, Uganda's largest corporate enterprise, announced yesterday that it has exceeded its target and its workforce now consists of 51% female representation.
In addition, the Ugandan telco now boasts 38% female representation in senior executive leadership positions and 36% women in leadership positions.
According to MTN Uganda: "With a target of hitting the 50% mark in 2025 as underpinned by the company's Ambition 2025 strategy, the company deployed a deliberate approach that saw it close 2022 with 49% female employees and in less than a year, the company has surpassed its 2025 goal by 1%."
The company intends to continue with its more evenly balanced gender ratio, and is focusing on improving female representation in management.
MTN Uganda's achievement comes after its parent company, MTN Group, committed to driving gender parity in its operations and acting on the gender pay discrepancies it identified. Group CEO Ralph Mupita stated, last year, that the business will assure employee pay equity.
Africa's largest telecom operator employs over 19 000 individuals throughout its businesses and aims to boost the number of women in senior and other crucial positions across the group. Women represent up 39% of the MTN Group's workforce.
To further promote gender equality, MTN also partnered with UN Women and joined the HeForShe Alliance.
MTN has since appointed three female CEOs to head its operations in Cameroon, Rwanda, and Uganda.
Mapula Bodibe was named CEO of MTN Rwanda, Sylvia Mulinge as CEO of MTN Uganda, and Mitwa Ng'ambi as CEO of MTN Cameroon.
