MTN expands Guinea network
MTN is investing heavily on network expansion and services in Guinea, in a bid to address poor rural network coverage in that country, a representative at the company has said.
MTN Guinea chief executive officer, Phumzile Phike, said her mobile network had injected $24 million for infrastructure development in that country.
"Poor infrastructure in the country is the major barrier,” said Phike.
“Not only is it making expansion much more difficult, it is also expensive operationally,” Phike added.
Phike went on to say that tariffs in Guinea remain one of the lowest in the continent but that the “operating costs are much higher than in most countries”.
She said MTN was also involved in the landing cable station that would bring the first undersea cable into Guinea.
MTN has over 2 million active subscribers in that country, according to Phike.
