Vodacom cuts roaming costs

Vodacom Tanzania customers now get free incoming calls while roaming in East Africa and SA.

The Tanzanian subsidiary yesterday announced that its postpaid and prepaid subscribers would receive free incoming calls and SMSes, and lower call and data rates in nine African countries.

The new roaming rates are effective on the Vodacom Lesotho, Vodacom Mozambique, Vodacom SA, Vodacom DRC, Vodafone Ghana, Safaricom Kenya, MTN Rwanda, MTN Uganda, UTL Uganda, and UCOM Burundi networks.

This follows Vodacom SA last week dropping its roaming fees by up to 70% in six countries – including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique and Tanzania.

Vodacom Tanzania MD Rene Meza says: “We know that people want to remain connected at an affordable rate, whether they are at home or on holiday in SA or travelling for work in Ghana, and that nobody likes the headache of worrying about roaming bills.”

The launch of reduced roaming rates, says Meza, is aimed at solving subscribers` travelling woes – particularly with regards to the high cost of data roaming. She says the savings campaign is the first of more to come in the near future.
