The United Nations (UN) has welcomed a request by global religious leaders for ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Amandeep Gill, the UN's technology envoy, spoke at the multi-faith event "AI Ethics for Peace: World Religions Commit to the Rome Call," which brought together eleven world religions, sixteen new signatories, and thirteen governments.

Religions for Peace Japan, the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, and the Israeli Chief Rabbinate co-organized the event.

Gill emphasised the UN's role in developing global AI governance and fostering international cooperation to maximise AI's benefits while managing interests.

He stressed that the Rome Call for AI Ethics captures the spirit required for effective global AI governance.

The Rome Call for AI Ethics was first signed in 2020 by Microsoft, IBM, the FAO, and the Italian government.

This document encourages responsible AI use by organizations, governments, tech businesses, and institutions, ensuring that advances in technology respect human dignity and the environment.
