Post-war Ethiopia prioritises ICT infrastructure renewal
To revitalise the health sector, the Ethiopian government and aid agencies are focusing on restoring information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure that was devastated during the 2020-22 civil war.
The destruction of technology systems caused major interruptions in the healthcare, preventing timely reporting of crucial data.
The District Health Information System came to a standstill.
Since the end of the conflict in Tigray, the World Health Organisation has collaborated with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Tigray Region Health Bureau to restore and strengthen health information collection, management, and dissemination.
Prioritising the restoration of ICT equipment has been a vital step in rebuilding and strengthen health information collation, management and dissemination.
The major goal of the intervention was to provide critical ICT equipment to 76 health offices and 44 selected health institutions in the region, such as desktop computers, universal power storage units, extra-storage hard drives, and internet connectivity services.
"We recognise that the restoration of health information systems is not just about rebuilding infrastructure, but also about rebuilding trust, resilience, and hope for the future of healthcare delivery in northern Ethiopia," said Dr Boniface Isindu, Incident Manager for Northern Ethiopia Response.
The government and humanitarian agencies have led the procurement and delivery of 120 desktop computers and equipment for the Tigray Health Bureau.
Efforts to establish internet connectivity are ongoing.
