Zambia wants social media platforms to pay local content creators.

Zambia's Parliament has begun debating a motion to promote the monetisation of social media in the Southern African country.

Legislators that favour the proposal anticipate that in the short term, information and communication technology will contribute significantly to the country's GDP.

This comes as more African countries pressure social media giants to pay content creators on their platforms.

Kenya is one of the countries that successfully bargained for the monetisation of its citizens’ content.

In Zambia, Romeo Kang'ombe, a Member of Parliament from the ruling United Party for National Development, stated: "We urge the government to facilitate the monetisation of social media in Zambia."

The politician is enthusiastic, saying, "This proposal has the potential to create millionaires in Zambia."

"“Money has to start moving from the books of Facebook to our content creators. Money has to start moving from whoever owns TikTok to our young people, because this is happening in other countries.”
