Electronic system to boost Kenyan tax collection

All taxpayers in Kenya are expected to file returns via electronic service ‘iTax’ by June this year, says the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

KRA commissioner general John Njiraini said this move is intended to enhance efficiency in the process.

“Part of the reasons why we have been cited as not efficient, in terms of doing business especially in the areas of paying taxes, is because of manual processes,” he said while presenting the authority’s revenue collection report.

“We have a system that we know is best practice, international standard, capable and tested, and we intend to use it,” he added.

The electronic payment of tax for large and medium companies came into effect on January 1 this year and other smaller companies will be enveloped into the system during the course of this year.

The system is planned to make it easy for employees and employers to remit and get a good glimpse of their tax situation from a personal computer or mobile phone.
