Kenya’s tech service providers regroup
Telecommunications Service Providers of Kenya or TESPOK has been rebranded as Technology Service Providers of Kenya to encapsulate the country's ICT industry.
The association brings together sector players and facilitates discussion with government and other stakeholders.
In an event to unveil its new logo, vision and mission, Fiona Asonga, chief executive officer of TESPOK, said that the ICT industry in Kenya is growing and they would like to grow with it.
"Today we are letting everyone know that we are the voice of ICT in Kenya, in the East African region, in Africa and at the global level," Asonga said.
TESPOK had to change tact to accommodate the many players in the ICT sector, not only telecommunication providers.
"TESPOK is now beyond telecommunication, TESPOK is now about the greater scope of technology as opposed to telecommunication," said the organisation's chairman Kris Senanu.
"As TESPOK we would have focused on what was then a clear industry niche or segment called Internet Service Providers and after a while we also brought in infrastructure providers within TESPOK, and that is the change that we are undergoing," he added.
Asonga added that they are proud to host the Kenya Internet Exchange point, currently the fastest growing internet exchange in Africa.
She attributed the growth of the exchange point to the growing use of internet to do business in Kenya, including the several government initiatives.
The CEO promised to engage the government more on issues that touch on ICT companies to enhance capacity building.
Francis Wangusi, the director general of the Communication Authority, lauded the new change at TESPOK.
"I am delighted to see that TESPOK is evolving, by bringing in new membership, trying to expand the scope and giving us the regulator a challenge on thinking forward," Wangusi said.
"For us, as the regulator, we have tried to see if we can create an environment for you [operators] that is conducive for your business and try as much as possible to remove barriers," he added.
The association also said that they will be unveiling a new membership tier for both current and new members.
