Orange, AFCON to hold talks on mobile advertising for SA

Organisers of the 2013 African Nations Cup are expected to meet officials from Orange, to explore ways through which South African mobile operators can benefit from the tournament without infringing on Orange’s rights.

The French-based mobile network services provider holds the rights to the tournament, whose next edition is scheduled for South Africa in January 2013.

Mvuzo Mbebe, chief executive, Afcon 2013 said, “Orange has the rights to the Nations Cup and those should be protected but we will discuss whether there is an opportunity for the local mobile network firms to benefit."

"I am hopeful of a positive result in that regard,” he added.

Mbebe said a positive outcome would be a boost for South Africa’s four mobile network service companies, as they would benefit from the spin offs of Africa’s most popular football showcase.

A non-agreement with Orange would be a setback for local mobile network operators, as their advertising in certain places such as stadia would be curtailed.
