Jumia.com a finalist at the 2015 World Retail Awards

African Online shopping platform Jumia is on the cusp of a remarkable achievement according to the company, following its finalist spot at the 2015 World Retail Awards.

The company is nominated in the e-commerce retailer of the year category and faces tough competition from six other finalists, Matchesfashion.com (UK), Michael Hill Jewellery (Australia), Yoox Group (Italy), Appliancesonline (Australia), JD.com (China) and Mudo (Turkey).

Ian McGarrigle, chairman of the world retail congress, said the awards were launched to highlight and celebrate the innovation and expertise that takes place across the global retail industry.

"With the industry facing enormous changes, this has never been more relevant and important than it is today."

Jumia.com is active in 12 countries on the continent and is supported by the Africa Internet Group whose CEO Jeremy Hodara described the ecommerce venture as "fast growing" and one that is "taking on a completely new African market."

Hodara added, "We have all worked exceptionally hard for our current success, and we will keep doing all that we can to make sure online retail in Africa continues to thrive."

The company notes that Jumia is no stranger to big award shows after it won a World Retail Award as Best New Retail Launch in 2013.

Jumia also scored a nomination for CSR Initiative of the Year last year.

The second and final stage of judging will see expert panels decide on the winner from each category ahead of the announcement in Rome on 10 September.
